The iconic former airfield Sebring International Raceway presents a unique challenge to all three Lamborghini Squadra Corse crews for the 12 Hours of Sebring, the second round of the IMSA WeatherTech Sports Car Championship this weekend.
Notable for its punishing bumps and relentless corners, Sebring is perhaps one of the most demanding circuits in the United States and the 12 Hours one of the most rewarding races on the calendar.
Lamborghini Squadra Corse will field three entries for the 12 Hours, one in the GT Daytona Pro category and two in the GTD class. Having debuted the new Lamborghini Huracán GT3 EVO2 at the Daytona 24 Hour season-opener in January, all three of the factory-supported teams will be using the successes of the past as motivation this weekend.
Courtesy of Paul Miller Racing in 2018 and Grasser Racing Team in 2019, Lamborghini has a strong record in the Sebring 12 Hours, winning twice and finishing second with TR3 Racing last season. The two victories were particularly satisfying for Squadra Corse, as both came off the back of GTD victories in the Daytona 24 Hours, completing a unique “double, double” in the unofficial 36 Hours of Florida.
Representing Lamborghini Squadra Corse in the GTD Pro class this year is a trio of Factory Drivers, with Franck Perera joining Romain Grosjean and Jordan Pepper at the wheel of the new Lamborghini Huracán GT3 EVO2. Grosjean and Pepper – alongside fellow Factory Drivers Mirko Bortolotti and Andrea Caldarelli – took the #63 to fourth place at Daytona, which was the first outing for the new Huracán GT3 EVO2.
In GTD, the all-female Iron Dames crew remains largely unchanged, with Sarah Bovy, Michelle Gatting and Rahel Frey driving the #83 Lamborghini Huracán GT3 EVO2. The trio will be busy in Florida this weekend as they will also be contesting the opening round of the FIA World Endurance Championship, the 1000km of Sebring, the day before the 12 Hours at the wheel of a Porsche.
Another full-season entry in the IMSA Sports Car Championship is the Forte Racing Powered by USRT Lamborghini, which will be piloted by the experienced Misha Goikhberg, reigning Lamborghini Super Trofeo Europe champion Loris Spinelli and last year’s International GT Open champion Benja Hites. Despite encountering issues during the race, the #78 enjoyed a positive Daytona 24 Hours, finishing seventh in GTD – the second highest of the Lamborghinis.
While Lamborghini is doing battle in the IMSA 12 Hours of Sebring this weekend, other factory affiliated drivers will be in action in different machinery in the 1000km FIA WEC race on Friday. Two-time GTD winner Bortolotti will team up with Iron Dames driver Doriane Pin in the LMP2 class with Prema, while Caldarelli will drive the sister Prema LMP2 car.
Track action begins on Thursday with the first of three practice sessions scheduled for 10:10, with FP2 taking place in the afternoon at 15:50. Then it’s onto night practice, with the third session beginning at 19:45.
Friday is qualifying day for the IMSA competitors. The session is split by category of car, meaning the GTD Pro and GTD runners will share the track for the during of the grid-setting session.
Following a 20-minute warm-up, Saturday’s race is scheduled to begin at 10:10, finishing at 22:10 the same day. All times are in Eastern Standard Time (CET -6)
