Race for titles to accelerate at final Asian fixture of season

The race for the Lamborghini Super Trofeo Asia 2026 titles is set to accelerate as the championship arrives in Shanghai for the season’s final meeting on Asian soil. China’s Shanghai International Circuit is the prestigious venue for the penultimate round of 2026 from September 4-6, the home of Chinese motorsport and host to the country’s Grand Prix.

The talent-packed PRO class has so far produced some of the most captivating racing in the series’ history, with Batmobile Racing’s Asian debutant and points-leader William Tregurtha laying down the gauntlet to his rivals on arrival.  The 26-year-old Briton was joined on the team by Monegasque star Jonathan Cecotto from round two onwards, and the pair has since taken five of the last six PRO victories together.  Tregurtha currently tops the PRO leaderboard, his solo round one double pole, win and podium giving him a head start over Cecotto in the points.  

Keeping Tregurtha well within striking distance is the young duo of Super Trofeo Junior drivers Liam Sceats of New Zealand and Polish talent Gustaw Wisniewski. The Vincenzo Sospiri Racing (VSR) pair currently sits just 22 points behind Tregurtha after eight races, a second PRO victory at South Korea’s Inje Speedium in July a stern reminder to Batmobile Racing that the title fight is far from over.

With a maximum 64 points still up for grabs across the remaining two rounds, Lamborghini Bundang by Racegraph’s Peter Li Zhicong of China and the USA’s Titus Sherlock, the third Super Trofeo Junior driver in the series, remain in mathematical title contention heading to Shanghai. Lady luck has not been on their side this season, two scoreless races dealing a hammer blow to their title aspirations.

Returning to the series and the PRO ranks in Shanghai is a second driver from the USA in the form of another exciting young talent, Barrett Wolfe. The 26-year-old is back with Lamborghini Busan by Racegraph having made his series debut in Korea where he took an impressive race two PRO podium finish.

Having won every single PRO-AM race so far this season, few would bet against the stellar VSR duo of Todd Kingsford and Chris van der Drift locking in the 2026 title in Shanghai. A gold standard example of the category, under the expert tutelage of van der Drift, privateer Kingsford has become one of the Asia’s quickest Am drivers and the pair have taken an outright race victory plus five top three finishes across eight races.

Batmobile Racing’s PRO-AM line-up of long-time Lamborghini Super Trofeo Asia driver Kumar Prabakaran and fellow Malaysian Putera Mu’azzam joined the series from round two onwards and consequently have only a slim chance of snatching the crown this season. However, the pair has ably demonstrated the successful combination of youthful talent with long experience this season in the second Batmobile Racing Lamborghini Huracán Super Trofeo EVO2.

In the AM ranks, while Kamlung Racing’s Bertram Lau may have topped the leaderboard after the season-opener, from round two onwards it has been True Visions Motorsports Thailand’s Suttiluck Buncharoen who has led the class, the reigning champion having won every race since. In Shanghai, Lau is joined by Mak Hing Tak, a well-known and popular figure on the Asian motorsport scene, as he looks to eradicate Buncharoen’s 25-point advantage.

Returning to SQDA-GRIT Motorsport in Shanghai is Kevin Lee, who raced alongside Yoon Jeon in Korea where the pair took two AM podium finishes together. In Shanghai, Lee is joined by 2024 AM champion Brian Lee Changwoo, a fierce talent with a proven Lamborghini Super Trofeo Asia track record.

Leading the points in the Lamborghini Cup class is reigning and multiple champion Supachai Weeraborwornpong. The Thai Siamgas Corse driver has won all but one of the races thus far this season to build a 28-point lead from closest rivals, Lamborghini Bundang by Racegraph’s Gerald Goh and Terence Tse.

Making their Lamborghini Super Trofeo debuts in Shanghai will be Chiow Teck Song and Tommy Ku Siu Lam, driving the second Lamborghini Busan by Racegraph car. Chiow is more usually found contesting the Malaysian Touring Car Championship, while team mate Ku is a regular TCR China and China Touring Car Championship contender.

China’s first circuit designed specifically for Formula 1, the 5.451km, 16-turn Shanghai International Circuit in Jiading District has hosted the country’s Grand Prix each year since it opened in 2004, with the exception of a four-year hiatus during the pandemic. Designed by renowned track architect Hermann Tilke, the facility has become the jewel in China’s motorsport crown, regularly hosting rounds of major international, regional and domestic competitions.

Lamborghini Super Trofeo Asia round five, its second event at a Chinese track his season alongside Ningbo, gets underway with two hour-long free practice sessions on Friday, 4 September. Two 15-minute qualifying sessions start at 10:10am local time on Saturday, with race one blasting off at 14:55. The second 50-minute race starts at 10:55 on Sunday, 6 September (all times UTC+8).
