Lamborghini Asterion: the hybrid concept car

19 9月 2019

The Sián FKP 37 is the first production Lamborghini powered by a V12 with supercapacitor-based hybrid technology, and as we already know, is the fastest Lamborghini ever. But many will remember that there was a concept car with very different technology which was the first to pit Lamborghini’s engineers against the challenge of electrification. Its name is the Lamborghini Asterion.

THE PURITY OF THE NATURALLY ASPIRATED V10 IN A PLUG-IN HYBRID SYSTEM

The Asterion debuted at the Paris Motor Show in 2014, and its silent entrance immediately drew attention. The vehicle has four different motors: the longitudinal 5.2 liter 610 CV V10 engine of the Huracán, alongside three electric motors powered by lithium-ion batteries. The two motors installed at the front provide 300 CV directly to the front wheels, while the third acts as a generator and is installed on the dual-clutch gearbox. In the combined cycle, the Asterion adds the power from these motors to that of the internal combustion engine, providing the vehicle with an incredible 910 CV permanent all-wheel drive! The lithium-ion batteries, on the other hand, are located below the center console for greater safety in the event of an accident, with the benefit of lowering the center of gravity.

SUPER SPORTS CAR PERFORMANCE

The combination of the two systems translates into incredible performance: the Asterion can hit 100 km/h (62 mph) from a standing start in three seconds flat, with a top speed of 320 km/h (200 mph). In full electric mode, it can travel 50 km (31 miles) at a maximum speed of 125 km/h (78 mph) powered solely by the electric motors.

THE SOUL OF A LAMBORGHINI IN A COMPLETELY INNOVATIVE BODY

The Asterion was defined as a hyper-cruiser, in other words a super sports car which also boasts comfort and luxury amongst its strengths. The design is unequivocally that of a Lamborghini, but very different from the Huracán and Aventador. In the Asterion, the Gandini Line introduced with the Countach gives way to a more distinct separation of the front and rear spaces, returning to a Gran Turismo design which is closer to the profile of the Miura. Curvy, sensuous, less harsh lines, but which still speak a pure and essential design language. The finely curated interior is a combination of Bianco Celaeno (ivory) and Marrone Attis (brown) leather, putting luxury and elegance at the heart of the driving experience.

HYBRID DNA

In keeping with Lamborghini tradition, the name of the vehicle is taken from that of a bull: Asterion is the true name of the Minotaur, the mythological half man half bull which symbolically represents the perfect fusion between intellect and instinct. A being with hybrid DNA, like the first Lamborghini to combine the rational power of the electric motor with the untamable thrust from the V10.

While the Sián FKP 37 with its supercapacitor system has brought a revolution in the world of hybrid super sports cars, the Asterion – only one of which was produced, now on display at the MUDETEC – adds another element to Lamborghini’s most profound nature, generating incomparable driving thrills while maintaining an environmental conscience.
