Lamborghini Squadra Corse and HP Composites: the sustainable lightness of being

30 March 2021

The collaboration between Lamborghini Squadra Corse and HP Composites goes back to 2013: the year that the motorsport department in Sant’Agata Bolognese was founded. Squadra Corse was developing the first Huracán Super Trofeo and in order to obtain performance at the highest level, the team needed to match the power of the V10 engine to bodywork that was as light as it was durable.

HP Composites, thanks to the experience gained with the LMP1 and LMP2 prototypes at the Le Mans 24 Hours, is the ideal partner to supply Lamborghini with components that make the Huracán Super Trofeo a benchmark in terms of both performance and safety when it comes to one-make championships. The car’s structure, from the floor to the bodywork to the aerodynamic elements, is all made from advanced composite materials, reinforced by carbon fibre. And the results are perfect.

The partnership got off to the best possible start and materials from HP Composites were also used for the first Huracán GT3 and then for the  Huracán Super Trofeo and GT3 Evo. Success on the track allowed Lamborghini Squadra Corse to broaden its horizons: in 2018 the SC18 Alston was launched – the first one-off car from Squadra Corse – followed two years later by the open-topped SC20.

Both of these projects were challenging from the point of view of engineering and aerodynamics: the client was involved in the design from the very first sketch, and the extreme styling required specific solutions to strike a delicate balance between total quality, lightness, and safety.

The most recent challenge is the Essenza SCV12: a track-focussed limited-edition hypercar, equipped with an 830CV V12 engine. This is Squadra Corse’s most ambitious project yet, combining the most powerful engine in Lamborghini’s history with uncompromising design and aerodynamics.

At the heart of the project is the carbon fibre monocoque inspired by Le Mans prototypes: made by HP Composites to a design by Lamborghini Squadra Corse engineers. This guarantees the perfect union of lightness and structural rigidity without using a steel roll cage, capable of passing the FIA’s strict homologation requirements to create a unique car that is without equal.
