General model biography: Murciélago

First presented to the world in 2002, the Murciélago represented the most technically advanced Lamborghinis ever produced. It was the first model to be designed on computer, the first to feature all the technical innovation from new parent company Audi, and the first that benefited from the investment that came with the new ownership. The change in process during the design and production phases of the car meant that the design team could create one of the best cars ever produced from Sant’Agata, improving on all the design characteristics of a Lamborghini.

The change in process during the design and production phases of the car meant that the design team could create one of the best cars ever produced from Sant’Agata, improving on all the design characteristics of a Lamborghini.

Using Computer Aided Design, parts were created accurately and repeatably, while designers could push the limits further than ever before with confidence. Furthermore, the Murciélago was the first Lamborghini to be conceived and entirely designed by the in-house Centro Stile team, led by Luc Donckerwolke. It was also the first Lamborghini to be planned from the start as both a closed and open version. With the Murciélago, production sales numbers grew and, up until 2010 when it was removed from sale, 4,099 cars had been produced, divided into numerous series, including the R-GT and R-SV racing versions.

Design Murciélago

The Murciélago allowed Lamborghini designers to use the latest technology to design a car that also remained true to the history of the company. Luc Donckerwolke benefited from a rare opportunity for a car designer, which was to be able to start a new car from a blank sheet of paper. His work delivered a car that was both modern and innovative, while also clearly retaining the Lamborghini DNA. The car was immediately recognisable as a Lamborghini, helped in part by the latest evolution of the 12-cylinder engine.

Murciélago Technology

The Murciélago debuted with the 6.2-liter engine, which had a maximum power output of 580hp. The established V12 engine with double overhead camshaft and four valves per cylinder, was mounted longitudinally at the rear. The car was characterized by having the gearbox mounted ahead of it, practically inside the passenger compartment, to allow for a shorter wheelbase and better weight balance. The first series of Murciélago still had the option of the manual six-speed gearbox, or the standard sequential. Power was delivered via permanent four-wheel drive, with a central viscous coupling. Worthy of note, both from a stylistic and technical point of view, were the air intakes for the engine that, depending on the thermal needs, opened and closed automatically.

Lifestyle Murciélago

The 2008 film "The Dark Knight", part of the Batman series, featured a Murciélago LP 640 as the personal car of the main character, played by actor Christian Bale. Many have questioned since whether or not the batman could ever drive any other car. In fact, the word Murciélago, in Spanish, in addition to identifying a breed of fighting bulls, means bat.
