LM002

THE CAR THAT PAVED THE WAY TO OFF-ROAD VEHICLES

Model biography

It is hard to imagine a more revolutionary model in automotive history than the Lamborghini LM 002. Originally designed for a military application, it became the first Super SUV in Lamborghini’s history, ahead of its time by a couple of decades. The LM (Lamborghini Militare) 002 combined the tubular frame, similar to that used in sports cars at the time, with the 5.2-liter 12-cylinder engine from the Countach Quattrovalvole.

That was combined with a selectable four-wheel drive system, with three lockable differentials and low-range gearing for enhanced off-road capability.

The styling cues of the car were deliberately square, designed to facilitate quick repairs as flat panels were easier to replace than rounded ones. The SUV was capable of speeds up to 200 km/h, which was incredible for such a model at the time, and it required specially made tires to cope with the performance.

Design

The simple and square shapes of the LM002 were not only designed for aesthetic reasons, but they had the practical function to cover the mechanical components underneath and were efficient to replace when required. Among the distinctive features was the bonnet, which could be adapted according to the engine used in the car. Three versions were produced in total, the last of which was characterized by flatter wheel rims and tubes mounted on the four sides as bumpers. Opening the doors provided one of the most pleasant surprises: a welcoming and luxurious interior, with leather-covered seats, a wooden dashboard and central tunnel. There was space for four people, with a large rear boot, left open like a pick-up truck which was accessible through a door hinged at the bottom.

Technical features

The LM 002 engine was powered by the 5.2-liter Countach Quattrovalvole engine that was revised to ensure greater torque and enable the use of lower-octane fuels. Designed to tackle the difficulties of desert terrain, the LM 002 was equipped with specific bodywork protection against sand. The carburetors, or air intakes on injection models, were protected, while the intake air passed through “heavy duty” filters for additional protection. The driveline was highly sophisticated, with lockable freewheel hubs for the front, low gears and differential locks. The tires, specifically designed for use on sand, were Pirelli Scorpion 325-65 VR 17.

Lifestyle

The LM 002 made two appearances in cinematic film: the most important, in the 1992 film “Toys” and, in a minor role, in the 2009 film “Fast & Furious”. An LM 002 also appears in the 2019 Japanese cartoon City Hunter. Even today, the LM 002 is very popular with young outdoor enthusiasts. It is perfect for carrying skis, bicycles and surfboards. However, it is a rare model, with only 300 + 1 units produced between 1986 and 1993.
