Lamborghini claims GT Open title and double ADAC GT Masters victory

25 Oktober 2021

Lamborghini secured its fourth International GT Open championship title in six years at the season finale in Barcelona courtesy of Vincenzo Sospiri Racing’s Frederik Schandorff and Michele Beretta. The Lamborghini GT3 Junior Driver pairing entered the weekend with a 30-point advantage and were crowned following a sixth-place finish in Race 1.

Following the triumphs of 2016, 2017 and 2019, Lamborghini reasserted its dominance in the GT Open championship through Schandorff and Beretta this year, claiming four race wins across the season. The duo took the early points lead after winning in the opening round at Paul Ricard, backing that up with successes at Spa-Francorchamps, the Hungaroring and the Red Bull Ring to put themselves in the best position to claim the title in Spain.

Schandorff and Beretta started the opening race from the front-row of the grid and kept their second place throughout the first stint before suffering a time loss at the mandatory driver-change pit-stop, dropping the #63 Lamborghini Huracán GT3 Evo valuable time and positions. Despite this, Beretta managed to bring the car home in seventh, more than enough to secure the title, as main rivals Andy Soucek and Al-Faisal Al Zubair (Porsche) could not get the podium they needed to keep the title fight alive into the final race.

Race 2 was a trickier affair at the start, with Schandorff and Beretta starting a lowly 15th, with the sister #19 car of Yuki Nemoto and Baptiste Moulin - who finished the first race on the podium in third - 19th. Both cars, however, showcased their raw speed in each stint, hauling themselves up to fourth and fifth at the finish respectively, ending the season on a high.

Grasser Racing Team deliver double ADAC GT Masters triumph at Hockenheim

Lamborghini also had cause to celebrate in the penultimate round of the ADAC GT Masters season at Hockenheim, with a clean sweep of victories across the weekend thanks to Grasser Racing Team. Saturday’s opening encounter was dominated by Lamborghini Factory Drivers Mirko Bortolotti and Marco Mapelli - the latter standing in for fellow Factory Driver Albert Costa - with the #63 taking pole position and leading either side of the pit-stop window.

Come the second race, it was the other GRT crew of Factory Driver Franck Perera and long-term Lamborghini servant Rolf Ineichen who replicated Bortolotti/Mapelli’s feat by leading from pole to their first win of the season. After a winless 2020 campaign, Lamborghini finally ended a long victory drought in ADAC GT Masters, which stemmed back to 2019. The final round of the season takes place at the Nürburgring on the weekend of the 6-7 November.
