Lamborghini aims for glory in iconic Spa 24 Hour race

28 Juli 2021

Lamborghini will return to the scene of the most famous GT3-only endurance race in the world this weekend, with renewed vigour and a crack factory supported effort across eight entries and 28 drivers for the iconic around the clock 24 Hours of Spa in Belgium.

The racing division of Automobili Lamborghini, Squadra Corse, has had something of a troubled relationship with the classic enduro over the years, having led previous editions in 2020 and 2017.

This year, the Sant’Agata Bolognese outfit is aiming high with eight Lamborghini Huracán GT3 Evos as it looks to make significant inroads into the GT World Challenge Europe Endurance Cup title race.

Leading the effort is the full Lamborghini Factory Driver line-up in the #63 FFF Racing Team Huracán of Andrea Caldarelli, Mirko Bortolotti and Marco Mapelli. They will be joined by the #19 Pro-Am partnership of Phil Keen, Hiroshi Hamaguchi, Stefano Constantini and former IndyCar driver Bertrand Baguette.

There are three cars from the Swiss team Emil Frey Racing, with the stars of the 2021 season so far Ricardo Feller, Alex Fontana and Rolf Ineichen lining up in the #14 Silver Cup class Huracán. In the Pro category, factory drivers Albert Costa and Giacomo Altoè will provide significant amount of experience and expertise alongside Franck Perera in the #163 car.
In the #114 Pro entry, Jack Aitken and Konsta Lappalainen will again be partnered by Frenchman Arthur Rougier, who race in the 24 Hours last year aboard an Audi.

Contesting its first full dual Sprint Cup and Endurance Cup season in GT World Challenge Europe, British team Barwell Motorsport will be looking to maximise the experience gained in last weekend’s British GT Championship round at the same venue for the 24 Hours. The Pro-Am line-up consists of regular season drivers Henrique Chaves, Miguel Ramos and Leo Machitski, with two-time winner of the event (once in Silver Cup and once in Pro-Am) and factory driver Sandy Mitchell completing the roster in the #77.

Grasser Racing Team has a long and illustrious history with the 24 Hours and will field a strong Silver Cup line-up as it aims to finally achieve the results it has deserved from what has been an up-and-down season so far. German driver Tim Zimmermann is joined again by fellow Lamborghini GT3 Juniors Kikko Galbiati and Alberto di Folco alongside Clemens Schmid.

International GT Open points leaders VS Racing will make a one-off appearance in the race this weekend as well, with Yuki Nemoto driving with his regular team-mate Baptiste Moulin – who will be racing on home soil in Belgium. Alongside will be Estonian Martin Rump and Dutchman Glenn van Berlo. Both have had experience in Lamborghini Super Trofeo, with Rump winning the Sepang 12 Hours in 2015 and van Berlo currently competing in this year’s European championship as team-mate to Raúl Gúzman for Target Racing.

The weekend kicks off with free practice on Thursday 29th July, with a four-part qualifying session taking place later in the evening. Friday is reserved for the Super Pole top 15 shootout which will decide the grid, with the 24 Hours itself starting at 16:30 CEST.
