Lamborghini 400 GT: 60 years of Grand Touring evolution
Sixty years after its debut at the 1966 Geneva Motor Show, the Lamborghini 400 GT remains a landmark in the evolution of the Sant’Agata Bolognese carmaker. Building on the foundations of the 350 GT, the model introduced enhanced performance, increased cabin space, and refined luxury, solidifying Lamborghini’s growing presence across international markets as a creator of exceptional Grand Tourers.
“The 400 GT represents a fundamental chapter in Lamborghini’s history,” says Stephan Winkelmann, Chairman and CEO of Automobili Lamborghini. “It was the evolution of our first GT and our first true 2+2, bringing together performance, elegance and comfort in a new interpretation of the Grand Touring concept. Its importance goes beyond the car itself: it helped establish an approach to the customer experience that remains central to Lamborghini today, creating cars that combine extraordinary performance with an emotional and engaging driving experience.”
Introduced in March 1966, it retained the elegant character of its predecessor while adopting a revised body that provided space for two rear passengers, increased headroom and a larger luggage compartment. The result was a more versatile Grand Tourer suited to longer journeys.
At the same time, the 400 GT marked an important technical step. The V12 grew to almost four liters, delivering 320 CV and increased torque, while a new gearbox produced in-house by Lamborghini and a revised rear suspension further developed the car’s dynamic qualities. The V12 architecture would remain a defining technical signature of Lamborghini for decades.
The 400 GT contributes to Lamborghini’s growing international profile, attracting customers from the worlds of entertainment, culture and the jet set, while also appearing in films of the era. The model is also associated with the world of music: on 30 January 1969, a Rosso Alfa example with black interior was parked on Savile Row in London during the Beatles’ final public live performance on the roof of the Apple Corps headquarters.
Today, 400 GTs remain in collections around the world and continue to be driven and shown at international concours and heritage events. Lamborghini Polo Storico supports the preservation of these cars through archival research, certification and restoration, helping owners maintain their authenticity, craftsmanship and historical identity for future generations.
“The 400 GT is one of the Lamborghini models that best represents the importance of our Grand Touring heritage,” says Giuliano Cassataro, Head of Aftersales at Automobili Lamborghini. “Many examples are still preserved and driven around the world, and their history continues to evolve through the passion of their owners. For Polo Storico, supporting these cars means carrying out detailed research into their individual histories, helping to preserve their authenticity and providing the knowledge and expertise needed for their restoration and certification.”
