Lamborghini Super Trofeo North America Sees Multiple Winners at VIR Round

24 8月 2020

The Lamborghini Super Trofeo North America championship hosted its second round of the 2020 season, with the field growing to 16 overall entries. The weekend competition at VIRginia International Raceway proved stronger than ever, as three of the four classes witnessed different winners in the two races.

Steven Aghakhani and Jacob Eidson were the overall and Pro class winners in Race 1 on Saturday, the second victory for the No. 6 US RaceTronics, Lamborghini Beverly Hills Lamborghini Huracán Super Trofeo EVO drivers this season. In Race 2 on Sunday, Brandon Gdovic notched the overall and Pro win, driving solo in the No. 46 Precision Performance Motorsports, Lamborghini Palm Beach Huracán. Gdovic was a four-time race winner in 2019, when he fell shy of winning the Pro driver’s championship by a mere two points.

Aghakhani was fastest in qualifying for Race 1, took the lead at the race start and stayed out front before handing the No. 6 Lamborghini over to Eidson.

“Steven made my job really easy,” Eidson said. “He got a nice gap out there so I just had to go out, hit my marks, keep my head down. The car was amazing as always. US RaceTronics, they always give us a great car and I don’t take that for granted.”

Eidson started on pole in Race 2 but was bumped off track on the first lap and fell to the back of the field. He and Aghakhani eventually finished fourth. That opened the door for Gdovic to drive to his first win of the season at the track near his Virginia home.

“Definitely happy to come home with a win at a home track,” Gdovic said. “Growing up in Virginia and this was the first road course I was ever on and what got me interested in the road-course side of racing. I love coming to this place and love winning here even more.”

Eidson and Aghakhani have a five-point provisional lead over Madison Snow (No. 16 Change Racing, Lamborghini Charlotte Huracán) following the VIR round, with Gdovic 10 points out of first place.

In ProAm, Leo Lamelas, driving the No. 24 US RaceTronics, Lamborghini Westlake Huracán, earned his first series win in Race 1. Lamelas was involved in the first-lap scrap with Eidson in Race 2, eliminating him from contention. Corey Lewis and McKay Snow capitalized to win Race 2, the third ProAm triumph this season for the No. 63 Change Racing, Lamborghini Charlotte duo.

“It feels great,” Lamelas said of his first win. “It’s the second time for myself in the car. I like Virginia. ... It was very hot (Saturday) so it was necessary for the drivers to be prepared physically and we need to take care of the tires also because of high temperature on track.”
Lewis and McKay Snow were pleased to redeem themselves in Race 2, solidifying their grip on the ProAm provisional points lead. They have 58 points to 47 for Lamelas.

“The beginning of this race was quite wild, the caution at the beginning,” Lewis said of Race 2. “Fortunately, it kind of helped us in terms of track position. McKay did an awesome job on the first stint getting the car exactly where we needed it to be. Toward the end it was just kind of managing the gap, leading our class and bringing it home. It’s big for the championship and that’s our main focus right now.”

Randy Sellari continued his strong run to start the season in LB Cup, winning Race 1 in the No. 03 Change Racing, Lamborghini Charlotte Huracán. A drive-through penalty for speeding in pit lane quashed any chance of Sellari making it four in a row. Instead, Matt Dicken, in the No. 36 Change Racing, Lamborghini Charlotte entry, bested his teammate in Race 2 to earn his first victory.

“It feels great,” Dicken said of the win. “Change Racing gave us a great car. It’s great to finally stand there on the top step. It’s something we’ve all been working really hard for, for a long time. I’m feeling more and more comfortable. Hopefully, success breeds success and we can continue this through the year.”

After two rounds and four races, Sellari leads Dicken in the provisional LB Cup standings by 12 points.

“I fought all the demons (in Race 1) and I held onto first, suffering, though, heat exhaustion,” Sellari said. “My cool shirt system failed. With about four minutes left, I did not think I was going to make it. ... (In Race 2,) I got a little speeding penalty. Other than that, it was a good weekend and the season’s going great.”

Victor Gomez IV faced competition in the Am class this weekend from Lance Willsey, who made his debut in the No. 53 Wayne Taylor Racing, Lamborghini Charlotte Huracán. Gomez, in the No. 29 Change Racing, Lamborghini Charlotte Huracán, made it a second straight perfect weekend by winning both races in class. He holds a 36-point provisional lead over Willsey after two rounds.

The VIR doubleheader was the second of five rounds on the 2020 Lamborghini Super Trofeo North America schedule. The remaining events are:

Round 3: Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta, 4-6th September

Round 4: WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca, 30th October-1st November

Round 5: Sebring International Raceway, 11-13th November
