Lamborghini back to fight for regional GT honours in Germany and UK

31 7月 2020

The saying goes: “if at first you don’t succeed, try again”. That is the motto for Lamborghini’s representatives in this season’s British GT and ADAC GT Masters respectively.

For the past three seasons, Lamborghini’s supported teams have been at the forefront of each championship, only to agonisingly miss out on the titles. This year, it is hoped, will be different.

British GT: Barwell Back to Fight Again

For a brief moment at the Donington Park season finale, the 2019 title looked to have gone the way of Sam de Haan and Johnny Cocker, who had inherited fourth place following an incident for their chief title rivals Jonny Adam and Graham Davidson in the Aston Martin.

But, a post-race time penalty for another Lamborghini – that of Dennis Lind, who was involved in contact with the Adam/Davidson Aston – meant the title slipped from Barwell’s grasp after the race.

Nevertheless, despite this disappointment, Lamborghini approaches the (delayed) new season having learned from its experience last year.

Leading its Silver Cup effort this year is 2019 Lamborghini Super Trofeo World Final vice champion Sandy Mitchell, who returns to British GT for the first time since 2017, teaming up with British Touring Car Championship veteran Rob Collard in a Huracán GT3 Evo.

In the sister car, British GT veteran Phil Keen will partner Adam Balon, with Keen eager to finally secure the title for Lamborghini this time around.

British GT: Optimism at WPI Motorsport

WPI Motorsport will benefit from Factory assistance this year in the form of driver Dennis Lind. The Dane, who drove for Barwell in selected races last season will hope to gain more experience in the UK alongside Michael Igoe.

Igoe has already achieved success in a Huracán GT3 Evo since the return to action this year, having won all three races of the opening round of the GT Cup season at Snetterton.

ADAC GT Masters: new-look Grasser has title in its sights

This season will be a bit different for Grasser Racing Team. For the first time since 2014, the team will not contest the GT World Challenge Endurance Cup, instead opting to settle a few scores at home in the ADAC GT Masters.

And team boss Gottfried Grasser is serious about it: GRT will field three cars and six drivers, all looking to go one better than the team managed last year in the hands of Christian Engelhart and Mirko Bortolotti.

“At the end of last year, we came to the decision of what to do for this season and after looking at our programmes,” said Grasser.

“We still haven’t won the ADAC GT Masters yet plays a part in it too. We’ve only finished second in Germany and we did it again last year, so I said to the team that we needed to win ADAC.”

Grasser has recruited Lamborghini Factory Drivers Albert Costa and Franck Perera to lead the team’s charge this season, with Dutchman Steijn Schothorst moving across from Audi’s GT World Challenge effort and German Tim Zimermann joining forces following two seasons in TCR. Lamborghini Super Trofeo Europe graduate Niels Lagrange also makes his full-time GT3 switch alongside Austrian Clemens Schmid.

The only Austrian in the team, Schmid has a wealth of experience in GT racing, having previously competed in ADAC GT Masters, GT World Challenge and the Nüburgring Nordschleife based VLN Series. Schmid also claimed an overall podium in the Dubai 24 Hours twice in four years. Testament of his ability in the toughest of endurance races.
