While awaiting the world premiere of Urus, the new Super Sport Utility Vehicle (SSUV), on the upcoming December 4, Automobili Lamborghini looks back on its SUV segment by paying a tribute to the legendary LM002.
In the beginning there came the LM002. Born towards the end of the '70s as a project designed to produce a high performance off-road vehicle for military use, called "Cheetah", it was then revived in 1981 with the innovative LM001 concept. In 1986, the model that was finally going into production with the name of LM002 was presented at the Bruxelles Motor Show.
The launch of this extraordinary SUV, with its powerful design matched by the kind of performance one might expect from one of Lamborghini's super sports cars, was met with great interest, as this was a car that greatly exceeded the standards of the day.
The LM002 sported a V12 engine, a development of the Countach Quattrovalvole engine, with an aluminium and glass fibre body and Pirelli's specifically designed Scorpion tyres. The vehicle's luxury interior, featuring top quality upholstery and made to measure for the client added the final touch of class. A total of 300 units were produced between 1986 and 1992.
At the Lamborghini Museum one can admire the black LM002 (chassis #12231) entirely restored by Polo Storico. This was the first Lamborghini branded SUV, a forerunner of the luxury SUVs.
There is therefore a thread that links the Urus to the LM002: the Urus model sees the birth of a new segment, the SSUV, that offers extraordinary power, driving dynamics and performance, alongside the unmistakable elegance of its design and interiors.
Going beyond the limits of off-road vehicles was not impossible with the legendary LM002 and the same will be with Urus. Automobili Lamborghini's DNA has always been about making the impossible possible. Hence the name of the motto-campaign for the launch of the first SSUV (Super Sport Utility Vehicle) Urus: #SinceWeMadeItPossible.
