Lamborghini Super Trofeo Europe: Nürburgring hosts penultimate round of 2021 season

2 September 2021

The Nürburgring circuit in the Eifel Mountains of Germany plays host to the penultimate round of the 2021 Lamborghini Super Trofeo Europe season this weekend, with Oregon Team’s Leonardo Pulcini and Kevin Gilardoni holding a strong lead in the Pro points standings. The one-make championship, dedicated to Lamborghini Huracán Super Trofeo Evo cars is one of the most competitive in the world and the action is once more expected to be frantic across the pair of 50-minute races.

Last year’s event produced some of the best racing of the year as Bonaldi Motorsport’s Dean Stoneman and Kikko Galbiati and Target Racing’s Kevin Rossel and Alberto di Folco split the race wins. Of the victorious quartet, only Rossel returns to the 5.148km track this year, with GSM Racing.

In the current points standings, Pulcini and Gilardoni head into the weekend on 89 points, 21 ahead of Johan Kraan Motorsport’s Max Weering, following the pair’s fourth win of the season in Race 2 at Spa-Francorchamps at the end of July. Dutchman Weering vaulted ahead of Leipert Motorsport’s Sebastian Balthasar and Noah Watt courtesy of a fine third and fourth place finish during the Spa weekend.

Three points further back, Balthasar will be partnered by a new team-mate for the Nürburgring; 2017 British GT champion Seb Morris will take the place of Noah Watt, who has unfortunately been forced out of the remainder of the 2021 campaign. Balthasar is in turn just three points ahead of Target Racing’s Glenn van Berlo and Raúl Guzman, who picked up their fourth podium of the year at Spa but who are equally still searching for an elusive first win of the season.

Milan Teekens and Maxime Oosten are another partnership not too far behind either, with the Bonaldi Motorsport entry just four points behind van Berlo and Guzman, while only three ahead of GSM Racing’s Jonathan Cecotto and Kevin Rossel. Spa-Francorchamps Race 1 winners Daan Pijl and Danny Kroes will again be a combination worth keeping an eye on following their breakthrough triumph in Belgium.

In the Pro-Am category, there are big title permutations this weekend as co-points leader Karol Basz will not be racing in the #16 VS Racing car normally shared with fellow Pole Andrzej Lewandowski. Basz’s place will be taken by the experienced Italian Edoardo Liberati.

As such, the Micanek Motorsport duo of Bronislav Formanek and Josef Zaruba have a real opportunity to close the gap to the top of the class standings, particularly following a disappointing non-score in the second race at Spa-Francorchamps. Leipert Motorsport’s Dan Wells and Oscar Lee will also be looking to profit from the line-up change at VS Racing, with the pair tied on 70 points with Formanek/Zaruba in second.

Fresh from a positive weekend in Belgium is Oregon Team’s Guillem Pujeu and Massimo Ciglia, who lie just six points adrift of second in the standings coming into the weekend. Target Racing’s Dmitry Gvazava and Andrea Cola are nine points further back and will be hoping to put a poor run of form behind them at the Nürburgring.

In the Am category, the consistency of Boutsen Ginion’s Claude-Yves Gosselin means that he leads the standings by a point from Leipert Motorsport’s Ray Calvin ahead of the weekend’s two races. Both had to watch on as Gerhard Watzinger and Oliver Freymuth take the class victories last time out though, which helped close up the battle for best of the rest in the title race.

While Gosselin and Calvin have a margin at the top, Gabriel Rindone is third on 65 points, six ahead of team-mate Watzinger, while Freymuth is only two points further back in fifth.

The two dominant forces in the Lamborghini Cup this season are set to resume their epic title battle this weekend as well. Imperiale Racing’s Hans Fabri currently leads the way on 107 points with four wins, while Boutsen Ginion’s Pierre Feligioni and Daniel Waszkzinski are just five points back after securing third win of the year in Race 1 at Spa-Francorchamps.

FFF Racing’s Donovan and Luciano Privitelio are up next ahead of VS Racing’s Kumar Prabakaran, with championship returnee Gerard van der Horst is keen to build on his double podium finishes from Spa, driving for his own Van Der Horst Motorsport team.

The weekend kicks off as usual with two one-hour free practice sessions on Friday before heading into qualifying on Saturday morning, following the established Q1 and Q2 format. Race 1 is scheduled to take place at 15:55 on Saturday afternoon with Race 2 taking place on Sunday at 11:30. Both races will last for 50-minutes and will be live streamed on the official Lamborghini Squadra Corse YouTube channel and Facebook page.
