Marcelli and Formal win the 100th Lamborghini Super Trofeo North America race

11 August 2021

In a historic weekend for Lamborghini Super Trofeo North America, the exciting single-make racing series celebrated its 100th race with a highly competitive doubleheader at Road America.

Drivers, team members, Lamborghini Squadra Corse and IMSA staff honored the occasion by gathering at the track, with everyone forming the shape of the number “100” for a commemorative photo.

Kyle Marcelli and Danny Formal will go into the record books as overall winners of the milestone race that took place Sunday. Starting from the pole position in the No. 1 Wayne Taylor Racing, Lamborghini Paramus Huracán Super Trofeo EVO, the duo put in a flawless performance to win the 50-minute event on the 4.048-mile, 14-turn road course. It gave Marcelli and Formal a weekend sweep of the overall and Pro class victories.

“It was just one of those weekends,” Marcelli said. “Right from Day 1, things were just clicking. We took a 180-degree turn with the setup direction on the car this weekend, so just a big thank you to Wayne Taylor Racing for having the confidence in us, making some changes and finding the speed that we did. We needed this.”

The double dip also earned the first Lamborghini Super Trofeo wins for both drivers, and elevated their spirits after a crash in the first race at Watkins Glen in June damaged their championship hopes.

“This weekend, we came here having to win both days to even have a shot at something at the end of the year after we had an incident at Watkins Glen,” Formal said. “The car was on rails all weekend. Kyle was fantastic; I think we both drove well.”

Another Wayne Taylor Racing driver, Jordan Missig, completed a weekend victory sweep of his own in the ProAm class. Missig guided the No. 53 WTR, Lamborghini Greenwich Huracán to class wins on both Saturday and Sunday.

Like Marcelli and Formal, Missig had not won a series race before this weekend. Through 100 races dating to its 2013 beginning, Lamborghini Super Trofeo North America has now seen 96 different drivers claim at least one class win.

“I can’t thank the guys at Wayne Taylor Racing enough for putting such a rocket ship car together,” Missig said. “The race (on Sunday) was really good. I was able to get out to a nice early lead against Brandon Gdvoic, and from there it was just pacing myself and keeping my consistency up and moving on to the victory.

“This is my first year in the car and I actually didn’t get in the car for the first time until we got to (Circuit of The Americas) for the first race. To be able to get two wins in six races is phenomenal!”

Gdovic – competing in his 75th Lamborghini Super Trofeo North America race, the most of any driver – teamed with Bryan Ortiz in the No. 46 Precision Performance Motorsports, Lamborghini Palm Beach Huracán to finish second in both ProAm races at Road America.

The Am class saw Ashton Harrison and Luke Berkeley each earn their second win of the season over the weekend. Harrison (No. 25 Harrison Contracting with Wayne Taylor Racing, Lamborghini Paramus Huracán) was victorious on Saturday and Berkeley (No. 23 Dream Racing Motorsport, Lamborghini Broward Huracán) won on Sunday.

“I’m very familiar with Road America; it’s actually my favorite track in the U.S.,” Harrison said after her win. “The last couple seasons in Super Trofeo, we’ve had these wild moments of not being able to pull off the win every time we’re leading. This year, my goal was to win, so I’m glad we accomplished that.”

Berkeley started second in class on Sunday but charged into the lead on the opening lap and held the point from there.

“First lap I was able to put the car on the inside in Turn 5, had a little bit of contact but got by and here we are,” Berkeley said. “I had no laps in Practice 1 or Practice 2 (due to wet track conditons) and qualifying was canceled, so I used (Race 1 on Saturday) to learn. With my coach, Gustavo Yacaman, we went over data and video, and ultimately I was able to find two seconds per lap today in race pace to extend the lead and hold it the entire race.”

John Hennessy wrapped up a weekend sweep in LB Cup, taking class wins in the No. 33 O’Gara Motorsport/US RaceTronics, Lamborghini San Diego Huracán. The Road America weekend was Hennessy’s first since he missed five races after sustaining a hand injury in a crash at the Circuit of The Americas season opener, and he couldn’t have been any happier than to come back and win two races.

“After my disastrous start at COTA, I tore ligaments in my thumb and I’ve been working, doing a little driving, looking at videos and getting some practice in the last few weeks,” Hennessy said. “I got a couple test days here a couple weeks ago, so I got a feel for the track. This track is just beautiful because you have some time to kind of relax and think about what you’re doing. This is the first time that I’ve really focused on just hitting my marks. I love this track; it’s epic.”

The championship races in three of the four classes tightened over the weekend. In Pro, Richard Antinucci (No. 27 Dream Racing Motorsport, Lamborghini Las Vegas Huracán) saw his unofficial lead shrink to five points over Stevan McAleer (No. 16 Change Racing, Lamborghini Charlotte Huracán). In Am, Alan Metni (No. 99 Change Racing, Lamborghini Dallas Huracán) is just three points up on Berkeley. Terry Olson and Mark Kvamme (No. 47 Precision Performance Motorsports, Lamborghini Palm Beach Huracán) are five points ahead of Matt Dicken (No. 36 Change Racing, Lamborghini Charlotte Huracán) in LB Cup. Gdovic and Ortiz were able to stretch their ProAm advantage to 19 points over Victor Gomez (No. 29 Change Racing, Lamborghini Charlotte Huracán).

Lamborghini Super Trofeo North America returns for its fifth doubleheader round of 2021 at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca from Sept. 10-12.
