Double Lamborghini Super Trofeo Asia victories for Batmobile Racing
Batmobile Racing’s William Tregurtha tops the Lamborghini Super Trofeo Asia PRO leaderboard after sensational double victories alongside new team mate Jonathan Cecotto at round two on the series’ debut at China’s demanding Ningbo International Speedway.
It was also a strong weekend for Vincenzo Sospiri Racing, the team’s crack PRO-AM pairing of Chris van der Drift and Todd Kingsford once again drawing attention with double class victories to further extend their points lead. The pair finished second overall in race two after Kingsford followed up a lightning stint by pole-sitter van der Drift with a spirited defense from hard-charging PRO Cecotto.
True Visions Motorsports Thailand’s Suttiluck Buncharoen took both AM class wins, while Lamborghini Cup success was shared by Siamgas Corse’s Supachai Weeraborwornpong and Lamborghini Bundang by Racegraph’s Gerald Goh and Terance Tse.
In race one, Batmobile Racing reigned supreme, the newly-minted PRO pairing of Tregurtha and Cecotto taking a flawless pole-to-flag victory, leading the charge throughout 27-laps of the deceptively-tricky circuit. Despite two heroic stints by VSR’s Liam Sceats and Gustaw Wisniewski, the pair had to settle for second, crossing the line ahead of Lamborghini Bundang by Racegraph’s Peter Li Zhicong and Titus Sherlock.
Race two saw Cecotto eventually overhaul a rapidly-improving Kingsford just minutes before the flag to complete his and Tregurtha’s double success, with Sceats and Wisniewski taking third overall, second in the PRO class ahead of Li and Sherlock. Buncharoen took a second AM class win in Ningbo after rival KAM LUNG Racing’s Bertram Lau’s race ended following an opening lap incident.
Tregurtha tops the PRO standings after four races with an eight-point advantage over Sceats and Wisniewski, while van der Drift and Kingsford now have a substantial 38-point lead on the PRO-AM leaderboard. Buncharoen tops the AM table, while Weeraborwornpong leads the Lamborghini Cup rankings.
The Lamborghini Super Trofeo Asia charge continues next month when the series heads to the foothills of Japan’s most sacred mountain for round three at the Fuji International Speedway from June 19-21.
Race one
Batmobile Racing’s Jonathan Cecotto took the first-ever Lamborghini Super Trofeo Asia overall pole position at the Ningbo circuit, beating Lamborghini Busan by Racegraph’s André Couto to the top spot, the Macau driver returning to the series alongside PRO-AM team mate and series newcomer Liu Zexuan of China. True Visions Motorsports Thailand solo driver Suttiluck Buncharoen locked in pole for the AM class, while fastest Lamborghini Cup qualifiers were the Lamborghini Bundang by Racegraph duo of Gerald Goh and Terence Tse.
As the fleet of Lamborghini Huracán Super Trofeo EVO2s roared into battle, Cecotto shot off like a bullet, shaking off an early challenge by Couto and cantering away. Behind Couto, VSR’s Todd Kingsford came under early fire from Lamborghini Bundang by Racegraph’s Peter Li Zhicong. The quick Chinese PRO driver swooped on the inside, climbing to P4 and setting off in pursuit of VSR’s Gustaw Wisniewski ahead. However, as Li moved in, Wisniewski had other ideas, diving past Couto and up into second. As Couto wrestled with handling, behind him Li was wasting no time, getting past and up to third.
The action was also heating up behind the overall front-runners, with Siamgas Corse’s Supachai Weeraborwornpong fending off a determined Goh, chased by Bertram Lau and Buncharoen, the four-car charge covered by just over a second.
When the pit window opened for the mandatory stops, Cecotto had built a healthy lead over closest-challenger Wisniewski, handing the car over to William Tregurtha who headed into his stint in P1. Liam Sceats took the wheel from Wisniewski, the Polish youngster having fought hard to reel in rival Cecotto over what had been an eye-catching stint.
Titus Sherlock took over from Li in P3, with Couto’s team mate Liu Zexuain resuming the PRO-AM lead ahead of Kingsford’s team mate and class rival Chris van der Drift, who had his work cut out to close the gap to the Lamborghini Busan by Racegraph driver. At the half way mark, Buncharoen held the AM lead from Lau, while Weeraborwornpong looked strong in the lead of the Lamborghini Cup.
As the second stint unfurled, Sceats pushed hard to close up to Tregurtha. Despite Sceats setting a quicker pace, the Batmobile Racing Briton controlled the pace perfectly to retain a vice-like grip on the lead. Van der Drift, meanwhile, eviscerated the gap to Liu with a storming run, diving past to snatch the PRO-AM lead, fourth overall behind Sherlock.
Putera Muazzam was also setting the timing screens alight, ploughing up the order having taken the reins from Batmobile Racing driver and team principal Kumar Prabakaran.
Despite his epic charge, Sceats was ultimately unable to catch Tregurtha, who crossed the line with a 3.691 second advantage to take his maiden overall Lamborghini Super Trofeo Asia victory and his second PRO win, propelling him to the top of the class leaderboard. Having maximized a superb opening stint from team mate Cecotto, the new pairing proved themselves a formidable force.
Li and Sherlock took third, their second overall podium, ahead of PRO-AM winners van der Drift and Kingsford. Second in PRO-AM were Couto and Liu, ahead of Prabakaran and Muazzam. Buncharoen took his first AM victory of the season from Lau, while Weeraborwornpong further strengthened his Lamborghini Cup credentials by taking his class wins tally to three out of three thus far this season, beating rivals Goh and Tse to the line.
Race two
VSR PRO-AM points-leader Chris van der Drift led the charge from pole for the start of race two chased by race one-winner, Batmobile Racing’s PRO runner William Tregurtha. As the lights went green for the final time in Ningbo, Tregurtha initially got alongside the pole-sitter having made a strong launch, but the New Zealander was not to be challenged by his audacious young rival.
As fast as battle had commenced, the race was suspended by a safety car after an incident involving Lamborghini Bundang by Racegraph’s Terence Tse, KAM LUNG Racing’s Bertram Lau and Siamgas Corse’s Supachai Weeraborwornpong. Tse was later handed a ten second penalty for the opening lap turn two clash, but it had brought a premature end to Lau’s race which finished in the gravel. Weeraborwornpong nursed his damaged car back to the pits where the team endeavored to get the him back out on track as the minutes ticked away.
At the restart, van der Drift was away like a rocket, timing his getaway perfectly to immediately pull a gap from Tregurtha, who was being pursued by PRO-AM team mate Putera Muazzam, Titus Sherlock, Liam Sceats and Lamborghini Busan by Racegraph’s Liu Zexuan.
When the pit window opened, van der Drift had gained an advantage of more than eight seconds before handing over to team mate Kingsford, who headed into his stint in the race lead. But closing in fast was Jonathan Cecotto having taken over from Tregurtha. As the Monegasque loomed large in Kingsford’s mirrors, the impressive motorsport newcomer held his nerve and the Batmobile Racing eventual winner was made to work for his win, ultimately making his move on the inside at turn 15 just minutes from the flag.
Cecotto and Tregurtha celebrated a perfect weekend of double victories, taking the team’s third PRO win in four races. Van der Drift and Todd extended their unbroken run of PRO-AM victories in second overall ahead of PRO young guns Wisniewski and Sceats, despite the latter picking up a five-second penalty for a tangle with Sherlock. Fourth overall and third in PRO were Peter Li Zhicong and Lamborghini Bundang by Racegraph team mate Sherlock, while second and third in the PRO-AM class belonged to Liu and André Couto, and Batmobile Racing’s Muazzam and fellow Malaysian Kumar Prabakaran respectively.
True Visions Motorsports Thailand’s Suttiluck Buncharoen took the AM win from class pole, with Tse and Gerald Goh winning Lamborghini Cup honours.
