VSR celebrates return with double Lamborghini Super Trofeo Asia victories

Vincenzo Sospiri Racing (VSR) made a triumphant return to the race tracks of the world’s largest continent, taking double victories at the opening round of the 2026 Lamborghini Super Trofeo Asia season at Malaysia’s 5.543km Sepang International Circuit.

The reunion of the PRO-AM pairing of two-time champion Chris van der Drift and Bronze-ranked team mate Todd Kingsford proved formidable when the pair took overall victory in race one, heading home the Batmobile Racing Lamborghini Huracán Super Trofeo EVO2 of newcomer and solo PRO entry William Tregurtha, and young VSR PRO pairing Liam Sceats and Gustaw Wisniewski.

An equally thrilling race two saw Sceats and Wisniewski narrowly pip VSR team mates van der Drift and Todd to the line after a spectacular last-lap battle, with Lamborghini Bundang by Racegraph PRO pair Peter Li Zhicong and Titus Sherlock joining them in the overall top three, the American resisting a furious challenge from Tregurtha all the way to the flag.

In the AM ranks, it was a hugely successful debut weekend for the TKJ Motorsport pair of Jonathan Xie and Sim Wong Teck after they took the class win in both races on their home circuit. Reigning and four-time Lamborghini Cup champion Supachai Weeraborwornpong opened his title defense with double wins for Siamgas Corse.

After a spectacular season-opener, Sceats and Wisniewski top the PRO leaderboard, equal on points with Tregurtha. A VSR squad also leads the PRO-AM class, this time van der Drift and Kingsford, while KAM LUNG Racing’s Bertram Lau is top of the AM table. Thailand’s Weeraborwornpong has already amassed a ten-point advantage in the Lamborghini Cup lead from Lamborghini Busan by Racegraph’s Steven Chian and Kim Sangho.

Lamborghini Super Trofeo heads to China next for the second of its six rounds where it makes its debut at the Ningbo International Speedway

Race one

Scorching temperatures provided an extreme test for both man and machine as the new Lamborghini Super Trofeo season burst to life in a blaze of excitement in Malaysia, and it was series debutant William Tregurtha who led the field away from pole position for race one.

Tregurtha had received a late call-up from Batmobile Racing team principal and long-time Lamborghini Cup participant Kumar Prabakaran, and the 26-year-old Briton immediately impressed on his Asian debut by topping both free practice sessions before convincingly locking in double pole positions.

Despite a mighty launch from the newcomer, a wealth of similarly fresh young talent was close behind, each eager to mount a challenge for victory. From a front row start, Climax Racing’s Elias Seppänen was immediately in hot pursuit of the lead, but Tregurtha held firm. Meanwhile, Lamborghini Bundang by Racegraph’s Titus Sherlock came under immediate pressure for third from Liam Sceats with the returning VSR.

Further back, Gerald Goh made a lightning start from P9, gaining three places, snatching the Lamborghini Cup lead from Siamgas Corse’s Supachai Weeraborwornpong and bounding up to P6 overall ahead of AM leader and class poleman Jonathan Xie of TKJ Motorsport. However, Xie fought back, as did True Visions Motorsports Thailand’s Suttiluck Buncharoen, but Goh nevertheless held on to the class lead when Xie found his way past. Minutes later though, Goh gained a position when Xie spun, dropping down the order.

At the front of the pack, Seppänen had managed to eat in to Tregurtha’s lead, the pair thundering side-by-side through three corners until the Finn finally swooped past with just under 40 minutes of the race remaining.

As the pit window opened, Seppänen held the advantage from Tregurtha, with Sherlock in third until a problem saw the American momentarily ease off and lose positions. That promoted Sceats to P3 ahead of VSR’s PRO-AM runner Todd Kingsford, the Bronze-ranked driver putting in a strong stint before handing over to team mate Chris van der Drift.

Sherlock was the first to pit, handing the car to Peter Li Zhicong, but the quick Chinese driver returned shortly thereafter, the earlier issue having returned. Seppänen was last to pit, passing the wheel to Bronze-ranked team mate Pan Deng, who resumed the lead of the race until Tregurtha caught and passed him, despite having served an additional three seconds in the pits as a solo driver.

Van der Drift was also on a charge though, passing Pan before eviscerating Tregurtha’s advantage. Tregurtha mounted a spirited defense, but the vastly experienced van der Drift got the better of the newcomer, snatching the lead with 15 minutes remaining.  VSR’s Gustaw Wisniewski also got by Pan, moving up into podium contention having taken over from Sceats at the half way mark.

The closing minutes of the race were just as dramatic, with Buncharoen ending his race in the gravel while en route to an AM victory, and Li returning to the pits and into retirement.

Buncharoen’s incident brought out the safety car, setting the scene for a dramatic closing two laps. But there was no catching the twice-crowned champion, and van der Drift rocketed away at the restart, crossing the line to take the overall and PRO-AM victory with VSR team mate Kingsford. PRO winner Tregurtha took a triumphant class victory on his debut, second overall, and his Batmobile Racing team having saved a new set of tyres for Sunday’s race two.

Taking the final overall top three place, second in PRO, were VSR’s Sceats and Wisniewski having made an eye-catching series debut together.

Lamborghini Busan by Racegraph’s Seppänen and Pan took second in the PRO-AM class, eighth overall after their glitch-hampered race.

The Lamborghini Cup win went to reigning and four-time class champion Supachai Weeraborwornpong who took a sensational fourth place overall, ahead of AM winners Xie and team mate Sim Kwong Teck at TKJ Motorsport. Kam Lung Racing’s Bertram Lau joined them on the AM podium, while Lamborghini Bundang by Racegraph’s Eng and team mate Terence Tse, and Lamborghini Busan by Racegraph’s Steven Chian and Kim Sangho, completed the Lamborghini Cup podium.

Race two

Taking his second consecutive pole following his outstanding qualifying runs, Batmobile Racing’s solo PRO William Tregurtha led the field away for the start of race two, chased off the line by race one winner Chris van der Drift in the VSR PRO-AM Lamborghini Huracán Super Trofeo EVO2. Starting from P3 was stablemate Gustaw Wisniewski after a car change by Lamborghini Bundang by Racegraph for Peter Li Zhicong and PRO team mate Titus Sherlock who had qualified third fastest. That meant the pair had to start from the rear of the grid, per series regulations.

As the lights went green, Tregurtha got away well but van der Drift was alongside as they charged into the first turn. The Briton initially held his ground until the wily Kiwi swooped up the inside to snatch the lead on the opening lap.

Li was also a man on the move, cutting a swathe through the field to P4 by the end of the opening lap ahead of AM leader Suttiluck Buncharoen, whose True Visions Motorsports Thailand team had worked overnight to repair the car after the race one incident.

Ten minutes in, Lamborghini Bundang by Racegraph’s Terence Tse spun, ending his race in the gravel. That brought out the safety car, eviscerating van der Drift’s advantage at the head of the pack. At the same time, TJK Motorsport’s Sim Kwong Teck, Buncharoen and Lamborghini Busan by Racegraph's Steven Chian were handed ten second penalties for a false start, the additional time added to their pit stops. Tregurtha was also handed the same penalty for a start procedure infringement which, added to his three extra seconds as a solo driver, meant he would face a major challenge to make headway over the second stint.

At the restart, van der Drift made a text book getaway, but Tregurtha, Wisniewski and Li all kept him within range.

Todd Kingsford tore into his stint at the helm of the field having inherited the race lead from team mate van der Drift, setting a blistering pace and determined to retain the advantage. Behind him, Liam Sceats had taken over from Wisniewski, and Li’s team mate Titus Sherlock and Tregurtha were similarly in hot pursuit.

Buncharoen retained the AM lead after the mandatory pit stop despite the additional 10-second penalty, climbing to P5 overall after Climax Racing was handed a drive-through penalty for overtaking under the safety car. However, the Thai’s advantage was short-lived when TKJ Motorsport’s Jonathan Xie closed and found a way past after a thrilling battle between the pair.

Meanwhile, Todd was holding his own in the lead against the hard-charging PRO drivers, matching their pace over what was an outstanding stint from the Bronze driver. However, with just ten minutes remaining, Sceats began to home in on the Thai-Australian. Behind the pair, a similarly bitter battle was developing between Sherlock and an increasingly-frustrated Tregurtha.

All eyes were glued to the two blockbuster battles over the closing laps; Todd fighting to keep his fellow VSR driver behind him as tyre wear inevitably kicked in, as Sherlock heroically resisted the determined Tregurtha.

A last-gasp, final-lap dash by Sceats propelled the New Zealander into the lead, crossing the line to take the PRO and overall victory from Kingsford by less than half a second after 50 minutes plus one lap. Sherlock crossed the line to claim the final overall podium spot from Tregurtha, who had to settle for a PRO podium on what had been an eye-catching PRO debut for the Batmobile Racing squad.

Second PRO-AM finisher and fifth overall were Deng Pan and Elias Seppänen for Climax Racing, while Xie and Sim took their second AM win of the weekend, sixth overall, ahead of Buncharoen and Lau. Weeraborwornpong also collected his second class win in Lamborghini Cup ahead of Chian and team mate Kim Sangho.
