Lamborghini Marzal enchants the Grand Prix de Monaco Historique

The legendary Lamborghini Marzal was driven in public for the first time in 51 years: on the occasion of the Grand Prix de Monaco Historique (11-13 May), His Serene Highness Prince Albert II of Monaco made the traditional lap of honour by the Monegasque royal family at the wheel of the iconic prototype, stimulating excitement and enthusiasm in everyone present, who witnessed a real celebration of the Marzal history in the setting that made it most famous.

It was indeed on 7 May 1967 when, just before the start of the Monte Carlo Formula 1 Grand Prix, His Serene Highness Prince Rainier III of Monaco, with Princess Grace by his side, made the legendary lap of honour on the track in this same car. The pictures of the royal couple on board the Marzal went around the globe, rendering this unique model even more legendary, remaining out of public view since that occasion.

Designed by Marcello Gandini on behalf of Bertone, and presented at the 1967 Geneva Motor Show, the Marzal was intended to satisfy Ferruccio's desire to create a four-seater touring car, reminiscent of the success achieved the year before by the Miura. The appeal of the Marzal was immediate: the crystal glass gullwing doors and the almost completely transparent cockpit with seats covered in silver leather make it very bright inside; at the same time, the external lines are amazing. On the mechanical level, this design masterpiece is the only six-cylinder Lamborghini. Built on the model of the Miura rear transversely mounted V12 engine, the Marzal engine was turned 180 degrees compared to that of its forerunner, leaving the first gear low down, at a distance from the steering wheel.

At the side of the Marzal was one of the most successful models of the House of the Raging Bull that the Marzal design inspired, and which celebrates its fiftieth anniversary this year: the Lamborghini Espada, a 2+2 series car created in 1968 and produced in Sant’Agata Bolognese until 1978. The Espada with chassis number 9090 present in Monte Carlo has just been restored by the Lamborghini Polo Storico and will take part in the Espada & Islero 50th Anniversary Tour from 7-11 September 2018.
